In order to encourage genuine organic farmers and to increase their business opportunities, the Govt. of India and State governments have initiated several steps. A few among them are:
Support formation or organic farmers` group’
Such groups can help each other in matters of inspection of fields, conversion process, certification, monitoring and supervision over the practices. Also, marketing of the organic produce could be executed effectively in numbers.
Registration of farmers` group with district authorities
Registration could be done under Dept. of Agriculture of Dept. of Horticulture, as per produce details. This would cover information on the individual members, plot numbers, area and crops planned etc.
Documentation of individual farms/farmer’s records
This is very important for later certification procedures. In case the farmer is unable or unaware of proper recording procedures, service providers registered with the State government may provide the same under nominal fees.
Service providers
State governments register several agencies to support farmers in production and marketing by disseminating knowledge and providing basic facilities. Some of those agencies are Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), State Agricultural Universities, Agri Clinics, NGOs, private entrepreneurs, Central agencies etc. Organic farmers can get assistance from these offices, regarding organic cultivation practices and recording of data.
Certification and Inspection agencies
Govt. Of India has 6 organic certification bodies to manage certification procedures for organic cultivation in the country. APEDA, one of the six certified bodies, has identified 24 certification agencies to process the certification procedures throughout the country. The current licensed agencies could be confirmed from NPOP website http://www.apeda.gov.in/apedawebsite/organic/.
