Aromatic oils have anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial properties. Some aromatic oils are good antiseptics also. These oils are used as health-stimulating agents in a variety of pharmaceutical and cosmetic preparations.
Effect of Aromatic Oils on Physical Health
Aromatic oils are used for a variety of health and wellness purposes. Some oils alleviate pains while others destroy fungal, viral, and bacterial skin infections. Some are rejuvenating by improving blood circulation throughout the body while others are curative. Herbs such as ginger encourage sweating to cure fevers. Ginger like herbs also strengthen digestive system. Aloe herbs are used for healthy skin. How aromatic oils can enhance an individual’s physical health is shown below:
Lemongrass oil: Lemongrass oil, when applied as body massage oil, alleviates chronic pain and also improves skin blood circulation.
Rosemary oil: Rosemary oil, when applied as body massage oil, alleviates pain, causes the walls of the blood vessels to relax and stops muscle spasms. Rosemary oil is also used to remove mucus from lungs and sinuses through inhalation. It is rejuvenating by improving skin blood circulation. Rosemary tea encourages sweating in high temperature fevers.
Peppermint oil: Peppermint oil alleviates pain, stops muscle spasms, settles digestive system, clears congestion in the bowels and improves skin blood circulation.
Lavender oil: Lavender oil heals wounds, encourages healthy skin growth, removes skin infections and reduces inflammation.
Chamomile oil: Chamomile oil reduces inflammation and settles digestive system.
Marjoram oil or Oregano oil: Marjoram oil stops muscle spasms, clears congestion in the bowels and causes the walls of the blood vessels to relax.
Basil oil: Basil oil encourages sweating in high temperature fevers, cures cough and common cold, and destroys skin infections.

Ginger oil: Ginger oil, an essential oil extracted from both fresh and dried ginger rhizomes have numerous medicinal and aromatic uses. Gingerol is sudorific; expectorant; stomachic; and emmenagogue. Ginger oil encourages sweating in high temperature fevers and cures cough and common cold. Ginger paste may be applied as a topical ointment but it is not recommended because it may cause allergic reactions to some people. Ginger should be used with great precaution during pregnancy.
Cardamom oil: Cardamom oil encourages sweating in high temperature fevers.
Fennel oil: Fennel oil clears congestion in the bowels, balances hormone production and dispersal, encourages removal of mucus from lungs and sinuses, and soothes the digestive system.
Clary sage oil: Clary sage oil balances hormone production and dispersal and encourages removal of mucus from lungs and sinuses.
Thyme oil: Thyme oil cures fungal infections.
Parsley oil: Parsley oil reduces accumulation of toxins in the joints and helps in regeneration of smooth muscles. Parsley oil mixed in carrier oil when used as a topical application helps in shrinking haemorrhoid tissues.
Patchouli oil: Patchouli oil is used as antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antiviral, and antifungal agent; it reduces fluid retention and can also be used as an aphrodisiac.
Effect of Aromatic Oils on Mental and Emotional Health
Aromatic oils are calming, relaxing and stress-relieving; some are stimulating, while others are rejuvenating and mood enhancing. How aromatic oils can enhance an individual’s mental and emotional health is shown below:
Geranium oil: Geranium oil may be used as anti-stress, anti-anxiety and anti-depressant agent to cure stress, anxiety and depression.
Patchouli oil: Patchouli oil is believed to be an effective mind stimulant and it can be used to heal mental agitation. Patchouli oil is one of the best oils that can be effectively used for aromatherapy for mind stimulation.
Peppermint oil: Peppermint oil heals fatigue, stress, anxiety and depression.
Lavender oil: Lavender oil heals insomnia or sleeplessness, stress, anxiety and depression.
Rosemary oil: Rosemary oil improves memory.
Chamomile oil: Chamomile oil improves mood; cures insomnia or sleeplessness and mental agitation.
Valerian oil: Valerian oil cures insomnia or sleeplessness by inducing good sleep.
Vetiver oil: Vetiver oil cures insomnia or sleeplessness by inducing good sleep.
Methods of Oil Application: There are mainly three methods of application of aromatic oils: aerial diffusion, direct inhalation and topical applications.
Aerial Diffusion: In this method, aromatic oils are used as vaporizers for environmental fragrance and aroma enters into human body through the sense of smell (olfaction).
Direct Inhalation: In this method, aromatic oil is added into boiling water and inhaled into the lungs through direct inhalation.
Topical Applications: In this method, aroma is entered into human body through skin via body massage, bubble bath or by direct therapeutic skin application.
