Aloe is considered as an important traditional medicinal plant, gel obtained from the fleshy leaves of which are traditionally used in several medical preparations for treating many skin problems and several abdominal disorders. A detailed account of various medicinal and cosmetic benefits of aloe products is given below:
In Ayurvedic Medicines: Aloe products are used for the treatment of skin problems and fresh wounds in Ayurvedic medicines. Thick leaf sap or aloe gel is applied as an ointment for treating skin burns, skin cysts, skin allergies, acne, dry skin (eczema), and skin infections such as ringworm. Aloe products are also used for the treatment of digestive problems. Fresh aloe juice is recommended for consumption in empty stomach early morning to cure digestive issues such as heartburn and irritable bowel syndrome.
Aloe plants and plant products are used for the treatment of diabetes and liver diseases in many Ayurvedic medicines. Oral consumption of aloe juice in empty stomach improves blood glucose levels in diabetics and persons with acute hepatitis, a liver disease.
In Ayurveda, aloe is used for the treatment of ulcerative colitis. It is observed that oral consumption of aloe vera gel reduces inflammation in patients with ulcerative colitis.
For the treatment of genital herpes and psoriasis, aloe and aloe products are used in Indian Ayurvedic medicines. It is found that topical application of aloe gel is effective for treating genital herpes and psoriasis.
Aloe is also used for curing elevated blood lipids and for the treatment of urine infections and urine related problems.
In Pharmaceutical & Cosmetic Industry: Aloe gel is an essential ingredient in beauty products – skin lotions, soothing creams shampoo, moisturizers, soaps, and sunscreen lotions. Aloe pulp is highly valued for its anti-ageing potential and extensively used in anti-ageing creams. Aloin, a mixture glucosides, which is the active constituent of aloe gel is used in laxative and anti-obesity pharmaceutical preparations.
In Siddha Medicines: Aloe pulp is used for treating constipation, spleen disorders and venereal infections in Siddha medicinal system.
